Writing Assignments
By Gail Grenier Sweet ©2005
- Set your writing life priority. Do you wish to polish one piece? Submit one or two pieces for publication? Start a blog? Do some research necessary for a writing project? Write those letters or catch up on e-mail? It’s all writing!! Write down your goal and post it on your computer, your mirror, your refrigerator, wherever you’ll notice it!
- “This summer feels just like........” [Go down memory lane. Use all 5 senses.]
- Do market research. What magazines or newspapers do you read? Study what they print. Study the Writers Market book in relation to things you read. Go to the library or bookstore and study books and/or magazines. Know your market.
- “If only.......” [Two of the saddest two words in the English language. Let loose.]
- Pay close attention to the writings of others. What do you like? Try one of the ideas -- make your own assignment.
- “____, the nectar of the gods” [Is it beer? What food or drink is heaven for you? Create a spread for us, in delicious detail. Make us hungry or thirsty... or make us laugh.]
- “First love” [A great assignment for tears or laughter - or both!]
- Write a personality sketch of a person who has seared your memory. [Hint: A grouchy but great teacher/coach/grandparent-type person makes a great sketch subject!]
- Write the story of an event that you can’t forget, even though you might wish to forget it. Be sure to have a beginning, middle, and end. Include all details, names, places. Paint it richly. Be there. Let us be there.
- “My earliest memory” [Go back, like self-hypnosis. Use all 5 senses.]
[To be continued….]
